3Rd Annual Chili Bowl Competition

I had to learn to cook from an early age since my mother was ill a lot of the time and my father was working two jobs in order to manage. I then went on to learn cooking at high school and I really enjoyed it. I have never understood those people who claim that they cannot even boil an egg and sound so proud of this fact. It is as if they think that cooking is beneath them and that they leave it all to someone else. The same goes for those people who say that they want to learn but that they cannot cook. It does not take a genius to follow a recipe and there are so many easy ways to learn.

The ground chile called for in this recipe is not the same as chili powder used to make chili con carne. You can usually find ground or powdered chile pepper in pouches hanging up in the Mexican food aisle or by the tortillas in your local grocery store. (Here's a visual aid.) California chiles tend to be mild, and New Mexico chile is usually labeled hot or not.

Of course, Bucyrus is the "Bratwurst Capital of the World," as the small town wrestled the title away from Sheboygan, Wisconsin in the early 1970's. Many of the recipes used to make food for the annual Ohio bratwurst event use authentic recipes from Germany. Local butchers have used the recipes for years, and the meat is cooked over an open fire. The annual event draws huge crowds. A queen is named for the festival, and there are parades, rides, games, crafts, and free entertainment.

One of the most important keys to successful slow cooking is using the properly sized slow cooker. If the pot is overfilled, it may not cook everything thoroughly or evenly. If the pot is not filled enough, the contents can easily burn or overcook.

About a couple of months ago, I first discovered a small restaurant near my house named Claim Jumper. I didn't think much of this particular restaurant because it didn't seem special or unique in any way. It reminded me of any other American restaurant such as Applebees or BJ's bar and grill. However once I went to this restaurant, I was simply amazed. For the price a person pays, they get a very generous proportion of food. Saute the onion in the oil. Remove. Add the southern spicy chili recipe and cook until it loses its color. Remove and set aside. Cook the chicken quickly until the pieces are medium firm to the touch. Remove and set aside. Add the remaining ingredients and cook for 15 minutes. Add salt and pepper to taste. Add the onion, the peas, and the meats. Toss lightly and keep warm, covered tightly, adding broth if the mixture starts to dry out.

You might need to start a little, or not, but then you turn the heat on, put on the cover, and wait several hours for it to cook. You can even go to work while it's cooking. When you come home, you have a delicious meal already. Also, it will be cooked to perfection. The needs will be as tender as possible. It's a delicious way to cook, and it is very fast and easy.
